PRIMUS: Cautious Comeback

September 26, 2003

PRIMUS frontman Les Claypool recently spoke to Billboard magazine about the possibility of the band returning for good following the completion of their upcoming North American theater tour.

Tickets for the road trip, titled "Tour de Fromage", are selling fast, and that sort of attention is encouraging PRIMUS to remain an active band.

"The touring market has been pretty soft, [so the strong ticket sales] obviously raise the excitement level," Claypool said. "When your agent gets excited and your promoter gets excited, that helps motivate things as well."

Claypool also wants to see how "Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People", the band's first DVD, is received when it is released next month on Interscope. The two-disc package features an EP of new songs plus the band's 12 videos, including "Lacquerhead", which was banned on MTV.

"We're all feeling each other out. I can't imagine it won't continue on, it's sort of undefined at this point," he said. "If you do something for a long time, it becomes a bit tiresome. But we're rediscovering this stuff. This is some insane music. That type of thing inspires me."

According to Claypool, each show on the tour will be split into two full sets, with old and new songs, plus some fresh material, making up the first half, and the second portion being a start-to-finish performance of 1991's classic album, "Sailing the Seas of Cheese".

"There's over 150 songs. The idea is to play them all," Claypool said. "After [drummer] Tim [Alexander] left [in 1996], a good 50% of our material we just didn't play anymore. So things that I haven't heard in years. And it'll be that much more exciting when thousands of people are along for the ride with us."
